Professional hospice caregivers work is deeply human, offering comfort, dignity, and reassurance to patients and families when it matters most. Each year, the Phaneuf Family Foundation shines a light on one extraordinary professional who embodies the heart of hospice care.
For 2025, the Caregiver Superstar went to Lisa Whitney, a hospice nurse with Visiting Nurse Home Care and Hospice of Carroll County.
A Surprise, and a Moment of Reflection
When Lisa learned she was named the 2025 Caregiver Superstar of the Year, her first reaction was simple and sincere: surprise. Being recognized for work she views as a calling felt meaningful, not just as an honor, but as acknowledgment of the compassion and advocacy she brings to every patient and family she serves.
That recognition became even more powerful when Lisa read the nomination submitted by her colleagues. Their words moved her to tears. Like many caregivers, she cannot easily see her own impact . To learn how deeply her peers value her compassion, humor, and authenticity was both humbling and affirming.
Purpose Shaped by Personal Loss
Hospice work is emotionally demanding, yet Lisa approaches it with grounded purpose. She speaks openly about how personal loss has shaped her as a caregiver. Those experiences made her more compassionate, nonjudgmental, and empathetic, qualities that families feel immediately when she walks through their door.
She chose this work because of her son, who lived a short life. As a parent, Lisa faced the same heartbreaking decision many hospice families face, letting go, but without the level of support she now provides. That experience fuels her commitment to ensuring no family feels alone during such a profound moment.
The Healing Power of Humor
One theme echoed throughout Lisa’s nomination was her ability to use humor in care. For families living through the hardest days of their lives, laughter can feel unexpected, even surprising. Lisa believes it restores a sense of normalcy. A shared smile or gentle laugh helps build trust and reminds families that they are still human beings, not just people navigating loss.
She wants families to feel comfortable when she arrives, to trust her presence, and to know they are safe being vulnerable.
Recognition That Supports the Whole Team
As part of the Caregiver Superstar of the Year Award, Lisa received $500 in recognition, along with an additional $500 given to Visiting Nurse Home Care and Hospice of Carroll County to benefit the team there.
Gratitude for a Caring Community
Lisa is quick to share credit with her coworkers and organization. She works alongside people who support one another and show up every day for their community. Her hope is that families know help is here, and that compassionate care is available when they need it most.
The Phaneuf Family Foundation is honored to recognize Lisa Whitney as the 2025 Caregiver Superstar of the Year. Her story reflects the quiet strength, empathy, and humanity that define hospice care, and the profound difference one caregiver can make in the lives of many.
