During the 1950s and 60s, Phaneuf Funeral Homes was highly regarded on Manchester’s west side, servicing the large French Canadian population of the area. However, there was room to grow and a presence on the east side and downtown seemed inevitable to support the need for Manchester NH funeral services. This was made even more obvious when Letendre Funeral Service, then Manchester’s largest funeral home, came up for sale. Arthur Phaneuf took a chance and, for the next 27 years, he operated under the name of Phaneuf and Letendre Funeral Homes.
By the late 60s and early 70s, Phaneuf and Letendre was assisting more than 350 families annually. Their reach grew to include Greek, Lebanese and Canadian communities and eventually it was clear that more space would be needed. In the fall of 1975, a brand new, stand-alone funeral home facility, covering more than 15,000 square feet, was built on the corner of Hanover and Union streets. With its spacious viewing rooms, large lobby, ample parking and stylistic décor, this new facility provided Manchester families with a funeral home equipped to meet all of their needs.
In recent years, we have evolved to keep pace with customer needs. For example, we have added a third chapel as many more of our clients are opting for in-house services. We have an in-house café with Wi-Fi. The Hanover Chapel has seating for more than 140 guests and incorporates state-of-the-art features including audio and video taping services, a high-end sound system and a large screen monitor for displays of family photos and/or videos. However, the beautiful stylistic elements still remain; the room is appointed with hand-crafted stained glass windows, custom-made pews and a spacious gathering area. For families who have chosen cremation, there is also a private family viewing area. With recent updates, we are proud to offer the most up-to-date facility of its kind in the state.
