The nonprofit Phaneuf Family Foundation awarded its 2021 scholarship to Jennifer Roberts, a mortuary student from Concord attending FINE Mortuary College.
“Jennifer has the right demeanor to help families through the hardest time in their lives. We’re proud to help her toward her career as an end-of-life professional,” said Arthur O. “Buddy” Phaneuf, President of Phaneuf Funeral Homes and Crematorium. Phaneuf also serves as a trustee and Chairman of the Board of the foundation. “It’s essential to support the next generation of funeral directors.”
The application asks about one’s best quality. Jennifer wrote:
“Probably my ability to feel and sense what others are going through so I can relate on a deeper level of understanding than just going by what I am told. I have been told that I am easy to talk to because of my compassion and sense of empathy. I know when it is appropriate to offer condolences or words of inspiration, and also when it is fine to be completely silent and just listen and be present for the other person.”
In her scholarship application, Jennifer wrote about her approach when making a moral decision:
“I think about the impact the decision will have on all involved. If I find that I am struggling, I will contemplate on it for a while or discuss it confidentially with my pastor about the morality of my choice. I like to think that I have a strong sense of morals and good values.”
Phaneuf Family Foundation offers scholarships of $1,000 to students currently accepted at or attending mortuary college. Students may apply any time of year. Scholarships are awarded in December and sent directly to the school. Students may apply via the foundation’s website.
Phaneuf Family Foundation was formed in 2019. In addition to awarding scholarships, the foundation’s mission includes:
