All Soul’s Day: Laying Unclaimed Remains to Rest

Every year people are cremated and sit abandoned on funeral home shelves across the country. They are sometimes referred to as shelf people.

They are men and women, young and old, rich and poor, from all different backgrounds and walks of life. The cremains are abandoned for many reasons: Some people have no families and thus no one to pick them up. Some family members can’t bear to claim the remains because the loss is felt so greatly. Some are simply left behind.

On Wednesday, November 12, All Soul’s Day, Bishop Peter Anthony Libasci will preside over a 6 p.m. Mass at the Mt. Calvary Chapel in Manchester to honor and accept these unclaimed souls. Phaneuf Funeral Homes and Crematorium and the Cremation Society of New Hampshire, along with several other local funeral homes will bring unclaimed cremains to be given a proper and dignified final resting place. Please feel welcome to join us in honoring these souls.
